we need to normalize long distance relationships & meeting people online becus not everyone has that perfect little relationship where you can drive 5 mins to your bf/gfs house. the world is so big, why should i be limited to people who are physically close to me

to be really good at recruiting, you need to just love meeting people who are good at what they do if someone refers someone great but recruiter doesn't want to meet because they're not a fit for a role that's open right now, that's a big red flag

Would you leave SF for a tech job in the Midwest? @jmj left San Francisco for Kansas City with a bag of clothes in 2011: "I saw the company on Twitter, which is what I was doing at the time. Mostly just meeting people on Twitter. They put out a job posting for a growth marketer. I DM'd the founder. We got on a call the next day. They said, 'You need to move to Kansas City tomorrow because we have all these other people who want the job.' I left San Francisco and moved to Kansas City without even knowing if it was Kansas City, Missouri or Kansas City, Kansas. I didn't actually know the difference between the two. To me, Kansas City was just a place. I went there with one bag of clothes, and I didn't have a place to live. My friends thought I was absolutely crazy. It was like, why are you leaving the tech ecosystem to go work in the Midwest at some company? The experience taught me that you can do crazy things, pivot your career, literally leave a city and go to Kansas City to start your career. That seemed like a crazy idea at the time.”

some personal news: this is my last week contributing full time to the ethereum foundation. 4 years ago, i did my first ethereum hackathon and have been working in the ecosystem ever since. i loved that you could make money contributing to open source while meeting people from all around the world. and that these opportunities were accessible to anyone who just showed up. ethereum proved what was possible. but the reason i love ethereum is also the reason im leaving. my mission as a crypto devrel was to empower builders, so that everyone, everywhere knew that they had a role to play in shaping the future of technology. i still believe in that mission, and believe that the best way for me to act on that promise is to share that story with the wider world. (more about what that means soon) i’m still extremely bullish for the future of ethereum. it’s truly one of the strongest, most tight knit ecosystems ever. we’ve literally traveled the world together, gone through the trenches, and lived in the same hacker houses for months on end. ethereum is special. and even though i’m no longer contributing full time to EF, i’ll always be part of this community. big thank you to every single person i worked with over the last four years. from @FundingCommons, @gitcoin, @Celo, @ethereumfndn and more. you’ve shaped my views, my values, and left me with a radical sense of optimism that i’ll carry forever. as for what’s next… stay tuned. will be sharing more next week!
