We've already endured a summer of extreme heat, but @WMO forecasts hotter & drier conditions from South America to South Asia, Europe, Africa & beyond, driving even more severe effects worldwide. We need to #ActNow# to protect people & tackle the root cause of the crisis.

I've just concluded a deeply meaningful visit of solidarity with Syria & its wonderful people. I've seen the scars left by years of conflict. I’ve heard about pain, loss, displacement & fear. But I’ve also seen resilience, courage & determination. I’ve felt a profound sense of hope for a future where rights are respected, equality is realized & opportunities are shared. The @UN stands with Syria at this pivotal moment. And I appeal to the international community to support the Syrian people as well.

The Syrian people have shown extraordinary resilience through years of hardship. They should not have to carry the burden of recovery alone. The international community must match Syrian determination with sustained political support, economic engagement & practical assistance.

The Sednaya military prison shows how horrendous the oppression was during the previous Syrian regime. Today, Syria is facing a moment of opportunity - not only to recover from conflict, but to lay the foundations for a more stable, inclusive & prosperous future for all.

Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity & territorial integrity must be fully respected. Violations by Israel of the 1974 Disengagement of Forces Agreement are unacceptable & must stop.

The situation in the Middle East is getting out of control. It's time to step back. My clear & consistent message to leaders: The fighting must stop everywhere. Freedom of navigation must be restored. Diplomacy is the only way forward.

I am horrified by reports that 500 people, mainly Rohingya refugees, may have drowned off the coast of Myanmar. This is heartbreaking & unacceptable. Refugees fleeing conflict or persecution and migrants seeking a better life deserve safety & dignity. They should never have to resort to perilous sea journeys.

For generations, Palestine refugees have counted on @UNRWA for support & essential services. UNRWA is essential to preserving the humanitarian conditions necessary for a just & lasting political solution with two States – Israel & Palestine – living side by side in peace & security. I urge countries to sustain UNRWA’s vital work to address the needs of Palestine refugees, uphold international responsibility, and help a volatile region find its way to a just & peaceful future.

Housing is a human right, and fundamental for human dignity. Yet nearly three billion people live in inadequate housing, often in informal settlements and slums. We must put housing at the centre of sustainable development — leaving no one behind.

Alarmed that a clearly-marked @UN vehicle was struck twice in Kherson city in Ukraine this week. Civilians & civilian objects must be respected & protected at all times. International law must be respected.

Africa’s continued exclusion from permanent representation in the Security Council is a historical injustice & indefensible. This is not about privilege or symbolism. This is about ensuring that the Council is fit for purpose & able to act with legitimacy and effectiveness.

For too long, Africa’s resources have been extracted, the value captured elsewhere, the environmental damage left behind. No more exploitation. No more plundering. The people of Africa must benefit - first & most - from the resources of Africa.
