By 2004, Morrissey had reclaimed one of The Smiths’ most beloved songs as part of his solo shows. “There Is a Light That Never Goes Out” originally appeared on the band’s 1986 album The Queen Is Dead, combining Johnny Marr’s sweeping arrangement with Morrissey’s unusually romantic lyric about escape, devotion and dying beside someone you love. Despite becoming a signature Smiths song, remarkably it was never released as a UK single during the band’s lifetime. At Manchester’s Move Festival in 2004, Morrissey performed it to a hometown crowd nearly two decades after its recording.
