AIS can tell you where a vessel reports itself to be. It can't tell you whether the anchorage is congested. It can't tell you whether loading has been delayed. It can't tell you whether weather conditions have changed, or whether something unusual is happening on deck. Location is only one piece of intelligence. Context is everything else. That's why I think maritime intelligence is entering a new phase. Instead of relying on a single position ping, the industry is beginning to combine multiple layers of information. Human observations. Satellite imagery. AI analysis. Independent verification. Each layer reduces uncertainty. Each layer brings us closer to understanding what's actually happening at sea. The ocean has never lacked data. It has lacked confidence in that data. Perhaps the next generation of maritime infrastructure won't simply track ships.
