When you've operated vessels yourself, your perspective changes. You stop asking what blockchain can do. You start asking what problems actually need solving. For example. Why do vessels disappear from tracking systems? Why do cargo delays remain invisible until they're already expensive? Why does one AIS signal still carry so much weight in a trillion-dollar industry? A blockchain can prove when something was recorded. It still needs someone—or something—to prove what actually happened in the physical world. That's why I believe the future of tokenization depends on much more than blockchain technology. It depends on servicing. Reporting. Verification. Enforcement. These aren't the most exciting words in crypto. But they're the reason real industries work. As tokenization expands beyond financial products into operating businesses, the conversation naturally becomes less about issuance and more about execution. They're the most successful real-world application blockchain has produced so far. But stablecoins solve one problem. They move money. Tokenization is trying to solve a much bigger one. It moves ownership. That's why Matt Hougan recently argued that tokenization could ultimately become a larger market than stablecoins. I tend to agree—but with one important caveat. Issuing a token is easy. Operating a real-world asset isn't. Once an asset comes onchain, the real work begins. Who maintains it? Who reports its performance? Who verifies that everything happening offchain actually happened? Without those answers, tokenization is simply digital packaging. With them, it becomes infrastructure. Perhaps the next stage of RWA won't be defined by how many assets are tokenized. It will be defined by how well those assets continue to function after they're onchain. That's a much harder problem. ⚓️ Ethra Ship Notes|Vol.037 Today, I kept thinking about one simple question: Where is the ship? It sounds easy. Open a maritime tracking platform, look at the map, find the vessel. Done. Except the real question isn't where the AIS signal says the ship is. It's whether the ship is actually there. That's a very different problem. AIS has been incredibly useful for modern shipping. But it's still fundamentally a reporting system. A signal can be delayed, switched off, interrupted, or spoofed. And even when the position is correct, it tells you surprisingly little about what's happening around the vessel. Is the port congested? Is cargo being delayed? Are weather conditions affecting the operation? Is there something unusual happening that the transponder simply can't see? This is where Sea Verity becomes interesting to me. Instead of treating one signal as the complete picture, it combines human observations, satellite information, weather data and AI analysis, with independent community nodes helping verify the results. The goal isn't to pretend uncertainty doesn't exist. Actually, it's the opposite. A confidence score can be more useful than false certainty. Sometimes the most valuable information isn't "we know everything." It's knowing exactly what we know, what we don't, and how strong the evidence is. It's easy to tokenize an asset. It's much harder to keep that asset connected to reality over time. A ship doesn't stop existing after it's tokenized. It still sails across oceans. It still requires maintenance. It still generates revenue. It still needs inspections, reporting, insurance, and operational decisions. In other words, the token is only the beginning. The real challenge is maintaining a trusted connection between the blockchain and the asset's entire lifecycle. That's why I think the conversation around tokenization is evolving. The market is slowly moving beyond issuance. People are starting to ask tougher questions. How is value verified? How is performance reported? How is trust maintained after the asset comes onchain? Those questions matter because blockchain doesn't replace operations. It amplifies them. The projects that succeed may not be the ones with the most assets.
