The 40-hour work week made sense in a very different world. Today, millions of people work 40+ hours every week, spend hours commuting, come home exhausted, and still struggle to afford housing, groceries, healthcare, childcare, and basic necessities. And before anyone says, "I work 40 hours and I'm fine," that's not the point. The question isn't whether people can survive it. The question is why so many people are expected to give up the majority of their waking lives just to stay afloat. We're more productive than previous generations. Technology has advanced. Efficiency has increased. Yet burnout is everywhere, stress levels are through the roof, and many workers still feel like they're running on a treadmill that never stops. People don't want luxury. Most just want enough time to live their lives, spend time with family, pursue their interests, take care of their health, and not feel financially panicked every month. A society shouldn't require constant exhaustion just to achieve basic stability. Maybe it's time to rethink the way work is structured instead of treating burnout as a personal failure. Reform isn't laziness. It's asking whether the system is serving people as well as it could.
