Venezuela# are exploring ways to unlock billions of dollars in frozen assets held abroad, looking to aid the South American nation’s recovery from twin earthquakes without placing more burden on US taxpayers, according to people familiar with the discussions.
The plan is to help the government of acting President Delcy Rodríguez rebuild without requiring Washington to go much beyond the $386 million it’s already committed, said the people, asking not to be identified because they’re not authorized to speak publicly. Venezuela remains hamstrung in its ability to access billions of dollars through the IMF, gold in the Bank of England and various other offshore accounts.
