I can't prove that the sudden explosion of calls to "regulate AI" by prominent officials and tech insiders was coordinated. But I'm not going to be gaslit out of being skeptical. There's very few industries that aren't subject to corporatist regulatory capture. Automotive, social media, food, pharma... pretty much everything is influenced by industry giants, using and being used by government insiders to serve private interests. We shouldn't be surprised in the slightest to find that AI is next. Think about it this way: Big Tech firms want to stay ahead of the competition, just the same as every other firm does. One of the best ways to do that, historically, is by cooperating with government to regulate the industry in such a way that your smaller competitors can't keep up. It happens all the time.
