Jeff Lutz was working at Motorola when Apple launched the first iPhone. He says nobody there was laughing. The story everyone repeats is that the phone companies mocked it. Lutz was in the building and remembers something else. The two companies had already shipped a project together, the first phone to carry iTunes. Apple executives were still carrying Motorola Razrs right up to the launch. What the iPhone did was force companies to write off their existing business and turn straight into smartphones.
