The Boy Who Came Back Every Sunday Every Sunday for 12 years, a young man visited the same hospital. He always sat on the same bench. Always at 4:30 PM. And always carried a small paper bag. Nobody knew why. One Sunday, a nurse finally asked him. “Are you waiting for someone?” He smiled. “I used to.” “Used to?” “My mother.” The nurse sat beside him. “What happened to her?” “She died here when I was 10.” The nurse looked confused. “Then why do you keep coming?” He opened the paper bag. Inside was a small chocolate cake. “My mother promised me she'd buy me one every Sunday.” “But she never got the chance.” “So I bring one for her.” The nurse didn't know what to say. For years, he continued. Rain or sunshine. Birthdays. Christmas. Even on Sundays when he had nowhere else to go. Then one Sunday, he didn't come. The nurse noticed immediately. She asked around. Nobody had heard from him. A week later, an envelope arrived at the hospital. It was addressed to the nurse. Inside was a letter. “I finally found my mother's old medical records.” “She wasn't supposed to die that night.” The nurse's heart sank. “She had a treatable condition.” “But the hospital couldn't afford the medication at the time.” Then came the line that broke her. “I've spent 12 years coming back because I wanted someone here to remember her.” The nurse looked at the name on the letter. Then froze. It was the name of the hospital's founder. The man who had built the hospital 30 years earlier. And underneath his name was one final sentence: “I'm sorry I couldn't save my mother, so I built this hospital to make sure nobody else's child has to sit on a bench waiting for someone who isn't coming back.”
