The East German government built the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961, to keep its own citizens in. Think about what that tells you. Between 1961 and 1989, border guards killed over 140 people attempting to cross. The state called it "the Anti-Fascist Protection Rampart." (Protection from freedom.) Families built homemade submarines, hot air balloons, and hollow car seats to escape the workers' paradise where the average wait for a Trabant was 13 years. Price controls destroy production. East Germans lived that daily. You didn't need a PhD. You just needed to notice the empty shelves and the armed guards keeping you near them.
