In the 1950s, the Boca Chica, Texas region and its beaches, was a popular destination for Rio Grande Valley residents. Then in 1967, John Caputa developed Boca Chica Village as a small residential subdivision, which was known for its natural beauty and isolation. It remained sparsely populated and undeveloped until the 2010s. @SpaceX started scouting Boca Chica in 2011, and began buying land in 2012, till they broke ground for their launch facility in 2014. They chose Boca Chica for its proximity to the equator in order to boost orbital launches, the Gulf of Mexico access for safe over water flights, cheap remote land, low population, and supportive regulations. @elonmusk first named his rocket launch facility Starbase, on March 2, 2021, when he tweeted about creating the city of Starbase, Texas. Prior to that, the site was referred to as Boca Chica, and since May 20, 2025, @StarbaseTX became an official incorporated US city 🇺🇲. Elon is literally putting places on the map, and in a single lifetime, changing the course of humanity to the stars 🚀
