Trump anger at Ed Miliband’s appointment as foreign secretary.
Andy Burnham has been warned that the US president ‘will not forget’ Ed Miliband’s fierce criticism of him in the past and that he has some ‘serious diplomatic repair to undertake’ in his new role.
Even if he was considered, think Starmer didn't want it. To go from PM to Foreign Sec and work under the guy who replaced you is probably too much for Starmer to stomach.
Not just "the guy who replaced you" but "the guy who actively took steps to sabotage and undermine your political career to force you out and replace you."
Whether or not Keir Starmer needed to resign eventually, Burnham has been working against Starmer for months (most notably, embarrassing him over the Gorton and Denton by-election).
The guy who actively took steps to sabotage and undermine’ Keir’s political career was Starmer himself. Man’s entire premiership was a series of unforced errors and u-turns.
Foreign secretary is also very much a position where you want someone who appears strong in front of other world leaders. Dealing with someone as the guy who literally just got demoted isn’t good for your positioning.
