when we were dogfooding follow up emails, I had to explain to @_matthewpalmer at length why i kept discarding the drafts. They'd appear after meetings where I'd said that I would "send something over," and the email would very helpfully offer to help me send that thing over - except, as it turns out, I didn't actually mean to send it over. You never want to have to say "I am not always an especially reliable person" in a meeting with your colleagues, but there is a phatic element to promises in meetings and not all of them necessitate actually doing the thing you said you were going to do. Instead of ignoring me as an imperfect user, Matt built some of that nuance into the logic that decides whether a follow-up fires at all. figuring out when and if a meeting deserves a follow up at all was a huge part of this project. I'm always so delighted now that it always appears exactly when i need it, it sounds like me, it reminds me to follow up the things that genuinely need following up. it's just one of hundreds of small slices of real, messy and complicated humanity that went into building this feature - so happy it's finally out!
