Women of the Kayan Lahwi, also known as the Padaung, are known for one of the world’s most distinctive traditional forms of adornment. Traditionally, girls may begin wearing brass neck coils when they are young, with additional coils introduced over time. Despite the common idea that the rings “stretch” the neck, they actually create the appearance of a longer neck by pressing down on the collarbones and upper ribs. The tradition has deep cultural significance, although practices vary between families and communities today. What looks extraordinary to outsiders is, above all, a tradition passed down through generations.
