This looks almost like a strange sculpture, but it was serious survival technology. This Greenlandic Inuit sealskin whaling suit, made before 1834, was designed to keep a hunter dry in freezing Arctic waters. The unusual circular opening in the chest was the entry point—the hunter stepped in feet-first, then tightened it to create a watertight seal. What really stands out is the craftsmanship: treated sealskin stitched with animal sinew, shaped for use from a kayak. Long before modern drysuits, Arctic hunters had already engineered clothing around the same basic problem—how to stay alive in icy water.
