Weāre hosting a members-only presentation and Q&A with fund manager
@LucasSacerdote_ on our discord this Thursday, 8ā9 p.m. Amsterdam time, to discuss our One to Watch report on LibertyStream and his recent deep dive with its CEO.
Ahead of the session, weāve made our One to Watch report free to read on Substack.
The thesis? Turning oilfield wastewater into a source of lithium.
Oil production brings vast quantities of salty water to the surface. That water contains lithiuma key ingredient in batteries. LibertyStream aims to extract it using modular plants connected to existing infrastructure. The company says this approach could reduce upfront investment and accelerate expansion across multiple sites.
Oil producers already bring the water to the surface. Water companies can earn royalties on the lithium recovered. And the US could gain a domestic lithium source as it seeks to reduce reliance on foreign supplies.
But can LibertyStream scale this into profitable production?
@LucasSacerdote_ brings in-depth research into the companies his fund invests in and interviewed LibertyStream CEO Alex Wylie last week. Thursday is an opportunity to dig into the investment case, examine the execution challenges, and ask your questions.

If you are new to the LibertyStream $LIB.V $VLTLF story, these are the most important points to put your attention on:
- Lowest CAPEX per tonne. 1.2xā2.4x more capital-efficient than their peers.
- By far the lowest CAPEX required for first production. Up to 80x less upfront capital.
- Fastest time till first production: less than 1yr vs ~7yrs for peers.

LibertyStream: Building Americaās Next Major Lithium Producer | CEO Alex Wylie
I sat down with Alex Wylie, founder and CEO of LibertyStream ( $LIB.V / $VLTLF ), for a deep dive into the company and what they are building in the Permian Basin, Texas.
LibertyStream has the potential to become one of the largest (if not THE largest) lithium producers in the U.S., with a model that could also make it one of the lowest-cost and fastest to scale.
The idea behind LibertyStream is surprisingly simple:
Oil & gas operators in Texas move enormous amounts of oil every day (~6 million barrels per day). And even greater amounts of produced water (~20 million barrels per day). That water contains lithium.
Instead of building a new mine, Liberty plugs into existing oilfield water infrastructure, extracts the lithium, refines it on site, and returns the water.
The lithium supply chain today is heavily dependent on China (especially for refining), creating a meaningful national security risk. Liberty is extracting and refining lithium right at the heart of the U.S.: Texas. They have the fastest time to market (conventional mines take multiple years), the lowest CAPEX, and a leading AISC (all-in sustaining cost).
The company has come a long way in a short period of time. Since I first came across LibertyStream, one thing has consistently impressed me: their ability to execute. Every major milestone they have laid out has been achieved, and achieved on time:
- Field extraction in 2024
- On-site refining in 2025
- Consistently produced battery-grade lithium carbonate for the past 3+ months
- Partnership with Select Water Solutions
- First commercial offtake signed
- Secured up to $95M in project financing to fund commercial expansion
- First 1,000-ton/year commercial unit now being built in Howard County, Texas
I had the opportunity to visit their operations in Midland in June, which helped me understand how much of the infrastructure Liberty needs is already sitting there.
That, to me, is what makes this story particularly interesting.
They are not trying to recreate the lithium supply chain from scratch. They are trying to bolt lithium production onto an enormous existing oil & gas ecosystem.
During the interview Alex went through the full story: the technology, Select partnership, unit economics, customer demand, project financing, permitting, competition, media manufacturing, scaling production, and what still needs to go right.
There is still plenty to execute on. But if (when) Liberty proves that its first commercial unit works economically and repeatably, the opportunity gets very interesting very quickly.
Hope the conversation helps anyone trying to understand the company.

$CSIQ trading at less than their 2027 45X credits!! Insane.
Also, not to underestimate how they are the only solar veteran operating in the US. That builds credibility in their ecosystem (customers, suppliers, etc). Sadly not in wall st, yet, but they will have their day.
Last week i was speaking with an renewables credit expert. āYou dont build a $700M factory without $700M in offtakesā. Well⦠CSIQ is building a $1.5B factory with +$4.5B in already signed and contracted offtakes.
That speaks volumes on how much customers are trusting them to ramp up capacity. Every other contender is a novice in this space. Only CSIQ has already built and operated multi-GWs c-si solar factories.
That lead compounds.
Not sure what wall st and sell-side analysts are seeing, but the day of reckoning will come. Patience.

I love how
@marketplunger1 explains his bullishness for solar. So simple, yet so deep.
I expect renewable energy to do very well in the upcoming months:
- Trump is probably gonna have a more moderate stance, given that 75% of his voters approve of solar.
- Democratic win in the mid-terms would fuel renewable stocks.

Explicitly told in the call that 100% of their US shipments are coming out of their Texas factory. 1,125GWs, or 4.5GWs annually. Running the factory at ~90% utilization rate. Wow. And sign of very solid demand.
Their Indiana solar cell factory begun operations. First ever in the USA.
And doubling their Texas factory nameplate capacity to 10GWs by end of year.
Their 6.5-7GWs of solar deliveries to the US already takes into account some of this expansion. And they reiterated guidance with strong confidence.
All-in-all, I thought this was a very solid quarter.
