Today 81 years ago, the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima hastened the end of WWII. While the devastation of nuclear weapons should never repeat itself, the particular context of the bombing must always be remembered.
The right-wing forces in Japan have been using the bombing to gain sympathy and escape accountability for Japan’s war crimes, which killed millions of lives in Japan’s neighboring countries.
Ironically, those right-wing forces are now clamoring for a nuclear Japan, which is most alarming.
Though the Tokyo Trials ended decades ago, the jury is still out on Japan’s attitude toward history.
