I’ve been talking with my kids - 9 and 16, about the future. They’re growing up in Silicon Valley. My son spends most of his day at a computer, goes to Alpha School and loves coding; my daughter has little interest in technology and wants to be a doctor. But what strikes me is that neither of them seems excited by what technology could make possible. When I was their age, the future felt like a promise: traveling to space, curing diseases, stepping fully into virtual worlds, flying to Australia and back in an hour. Unlimited energy, abundance and joy. It felt like something our generation would get to imagine and build. To my kids, the future feels like something that will happen to them - more AI, more robots, more screens, a world that feels less human. At best, they’ll have to adapt. They don’t see themselves as the authors of the future, but as its subjects. Where did we go wrong? When did progress become something young people brace for rather than dream about? And how do we give them back the feeling that the future belongs to them - that it’s theirs to imagine, shape, and build?
