Adopted 34 years ago, the Constitution of the Slovak Republic provided the legal foundation for the independent and sovereign Slovak state — a goal pursued by generations of Slovaks. It has also proved to be a strong and enduring document whose fundamental principles remain sound. I therefore reject calls to rewrite the Constitution from scratch simply because some political or expert groups disagree with its foundations. Constitutional change should be approached with respect, restraint, and broad political consensus. Amendments may be necessary as society evolves, but they should serve the country, not short-term political interests. Agreement with at least part of the opposition should be the standard for such changes. Today may no longer be a day off, but it remains a state holiday worthy of respect. I wish everyone a meaningful holiday and our Constitution a long life in the service of the Slovak people.
