Disney’s live-action Moana is off to a disappointing start at the box office and is now expected to become one of the studio’s biggest financial losses in recent years.
The film opened with $43 million in the U.S., well below early projections of around $60–$85 million With a reported production budget of around $250 million,
According to Deadline, the movie is now expected to lose between $100 million and $125 million during its theatrical run.
The original Moana was a major hit, and Moana 2 earned more than $1 billion worldwide, but analysts believe audiences had little interest in a live-action remake of a movie that is only ten years old.
