Ammar Shaqalih is 16-years-old and has been displaced eight times due to the ongoing genocide in Gaza. After his father was martyred by Israeli forces, he became the primary provider for his ill mother and his five younger siblings, the youngest of whom is 10. The family now lives with friends, where Ammar pays $400 monthly for rent and related costs while trying to meet their total needs of around $900 per month, including $100 for his siblings’ school fees whenever classes are held. He takes on any available day labor, often returning home with no more than a single loaf of bread to divide among the seven family members and the small cat they adopted after finding her terrified during a bombing. The genocide ended Ammar’s own education and his aspiration to become an engineer, yet he continues working to provide food, medicine for his mother, and whatever education is possible for his brothers and sister, all while holding onto hope that his mother will recover and his siblings can still experience a childhood and future that circumstances denied him.
