Regarding UPS Flight 2976, an NTSB investigative hearing revealed a troubling pattern. Records showed that at least 10 in-service spherical bearing failures were discovered during maintenance inspections over a 20-year period before the MD-11 accident. Seven of those failures were reported to Boeing, while four were reported to the FAA. Despite the recurring issue, Boeing maintained that bearing race fractures were not considered a safety-of-flight concern, raising questions about whether earlier intervention could have prevented the accident.
