Beijing tried to bully a Canadian lawmaker into staying home. He booked a flight to Taiwan instead.
Conservative MP Michael Chong is currently en route to Taipei, openly defying a blunt warning from China’s Ambassador, Wang Di, who threatened that trade would be damaged if Canadian officials keep visiting the island.
The Chinese Embassy instantly condemned the trip, calling it a breach of Beijing’s absolute "red line" and demanding Ottawa "restrain" its politicians.
Chong’s response was a masterclass in sovereign pushback:
"Canada is a sovereign and independent country. We do not take direction from a foreign government about where Canadian MPs can travel internationally."
This high-stakes trip lands right after the Trump-Xi summit, where Beijing warned that Taiwan independence and peace are as irreconcilable as "fire and water."
By showing up in Taipei, Chong is proving that a G7 nation's foreign policy isn't dictated by Beijing's economic threats.
