My boss fired me two days before my 10-year anniversary at the company.
He handed me a check for $4,800 and said,
“That’s all you’re getting.”
I didn’t argue.
I packed my things and left.
The next morning, the company’s biggest client called me.
His first question was:
“Did they really fire you?”
I said yes.
He went quiet.
Then he said,
“Then they just made a very expensive mistake.”
My mother called me at 6:14 a.m. and asked,
“Are you still living in the house you bought last year?”
I laughed.
“Of course. Why?”
She went quiet.
Then she said,
“Don’t go home today.”
I asked what happened.
She wouldn’t explain.
She only said,
“Please trust me this one time.”
I was browsing a thrift store when I found a framed painting for $12.
I didn’t even like the painting.
I just thought the frame would look nice in my apartment.
When I got home, I took the back off to remove the picture.
That’s when another painting slid out from behind it.
It had been hidden there the whole time.
It looked much older than the one in the frame.
