As Toby Young @toadmeister and others have already pointed out - Stanley @timothy_stanley makes the same mistake that has become increasingly common in climate reporting: he conflates weather with climate. Yes, parts of Europe have experienced a busy wildfire season this year. But a single season does not establish a long-term climate trend. Looking at the available data, wildfire activity across the Mediterranean since around 1980 has not shown the sustained increase his article implies. Some years have been comparable or even worse. He also claims that France historically experienced only around 15 wildfires a year. The figure is actually closer to 100, making the comparison misleading. If we’re going to have a serious discussion about climate, it should begin with accurately representing the evidence rather than using individual weather events to support broader claims that the long-term data do not necessarily support.
