Happy to give more context, as people keep asking me about it. I was the White House reporter for Breitbart News under the Obama admin, Trump 1.0, and Biden. Team Obama gave me my first hard pass after about a year of requesting daily passes. WHCA welcomed us and added me to the supplemental pool to prove ourselves with the goal of shifting to the WHCA in-town pool. The supplemental pool opportunities were rare, primarily used to cover the vice president when he wanted. After Trump won the first time, the WHCA invited me to help cover the inauguration from the vice president’s perspective as part of the supplemental pool. It was a welcome step for the WHCA but when we requested membership for the in-town pool, the Senate Daily Press Gallery pulled Breitbart’s congressional credentials. I was told by WHCA leadership that the WHCA doesn’t decide who is a journalist or not, they leave that up to the Congressional committee. Hard passes are security passes and issued by the White House. At the time, I was told by WHCA officials that we had to have a permanent credential from Congress in order to join the in-town or travel pools. That left us in pool limbo despite all my efforts to get Breitbart into the WHCA press pools. The WHCA reorganized and stripped Breitbart's supplemental pool membership and voting rights. Under Biden, I had a WH hard pass, but it was extremely limited at first because of COVID. By the time we got our congressional passes back, I left Breitbart News. @samstein @AndrewBatesNC @whca

It’s real, and multiple people who were in Aspen that day remember the moment. The video does matter, but it’s not the only reason the board voted to appoint Erika. I spoke to several Turning Point donors and close friends of Charlie who revealed that after Butler, there was a very real fear about his safety and the future of his organization. Charlie reassured them: He would leave Turning Point to Erika and the board to carry on the mission if the worst happened.
