"I'd like to talk about how the addiction framework may offer an additional lens to understand trans ideation and identification. We know the adoption of a trans identity is multifaceted and there is no single lens that can fully explain this phenomenon. I believe that for many it may function much like an addiction. Like a substance; ideation, identification and affirmation, can offer a type of high and relief. A promised exit from overwhelm, confusion, depression, shame, and so it makes sense there would be a desire for it, an addictive type of draw. Ideation and the need for affirmation often makes sense when someone does not yet have the tools to navigate, understand, or verbalize their complex feelings."
