In 1918 the Holt Manufacturing Company in California put together the HA 36, a miniature one-man tank that looked like a scaled-down British rhomboid. It weighed roughly 2,000 to 3,000 pounds, measured about 8 feet long by 5 feet wide, and was smaller than a Model T Ford. The single driver climbed in through a top hatch and steered a vehicle whose side sponsons and front “gun” were dummies—the forward tube was simply the engine exhaust. Built as a promotional demonstrator rather than a fighting machine, it generated newspaper claims that fleets of the little tanks would soon ship to France, yet only the one example ever existed. 👀
