The connection between oranges and “Portugal” comes from trade and language contact during the late medieval and early modern periods. Sweet oranges originally came from Southeast Asia, likely southern China and northeast India, and were spread westward through Arab traders into the Mediterranean. By the time Europeans began importing them more widely, bitter oranges were already known, but the sweeter varieties that became popular were strongly associated with Portuguese merchants who played a major role in expanding Atlantic and Mediterranean trade networks in the 15th and 16th centuries. Because many people in parts of southeastern Europe first encountered the fruit through Portuguese trade routes, some languages began naming it after the country itself. This is why Greek “portokali” and Albanian “portokall” developed, and similar forms like Turkish “portakal” also appeared through Ottoman-era linguistic borrowing. Over time, the association stuck even though Portugal was not the place of origin.
