The notion that the One China Principle is “accepted by all” is factually incorrect. Some countries still formally recognise Taiwan, and many operate a One China policy (NOT a one China principle) which does not presume Beijing’s sovereignty over Taiwan. It is true that the PRC is recognised widely as the representative of China. That isn’t the same thing as recognising Taiwan as a “part of China”. This is basic stuff. Facts: - Taiwan has never been a part of the People’s Republic of China. - Taiwan was ruled from mainland China for a shorter period than the Dutch. - Before there were any settlers in Taiwan, indigenous communities with no ties to the mainland had lived there for thousands of years. This is not the way to grapple with the constitutional anachronisms of the post-war period. Given Malaysia’s own struggle for self-determination and independence from British rule, you’d think he would have more sympathy with Taiwan’s 23 million people, who do not wish to be ruled by the CCP.
