Tokayev quietly “reset” his term A new Constitution has come into force in Kazakhstan, allowing Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to run in presidential elections once again. Previously, the country had a rule that the president could serve only one seven-year term with no right to re-election. However, the Constitutional Court ruled that previous terms are not counted after the adoption of the new Constitution. In 2022, Tokayev said he had no intention of “resetting” his term. However, the new rules now allow him to do so.
