On this World Cleanup Day, we celebrate the work of Re:wild Your Campus founder and Obama Foundation Leader Mackenzie Feldman. Today, she’s taking us on a tour of the Obama Presidential Center Museum with an eye for Barack Obama’s climate work.

At 6 years old, Alex wrote to President Obama offering to welcome a young Syrian boy into his family. His letter reached the United Nations, the White House — and, 10 years later, the Obama Presidential Center. A small act of kindness can travel farther than we imagine.

She raced across the South Lawn, kept watch over Bo and never turned down a belly rub. Wherever the Obama family went, Sunny helped make it feel like home. Rest well, Sunny. You will be missed.

The Obama family shared that Sunny passed away yesterday after 13 years by their side. She was fiercely protective of her big brother, Bo, and we can imagine the two of them together again. Today, hold your pets a little closer and cherish every moment you share.

Yesterday, we lost a cherished member of our family. We got Sunny at the start of our second term in the White House, and all of us – including our first dog, Bo – immediately fell in love. We also had trouble keeping up with her, for Sunny was a force of nature. Athletic and full of boundless energy, she leapt over the hedges on the South Lawn like they weren’t even there, chasing squirrels, birds and anything else that moved. And whereas the way to Bo’s heart usually involved a treat, Sunny was more interested in having us run around with her, roll on the floor with her, or have her belly rubbed for as long as we were willing. She loved the girls, even if they were pestering her when she was napping. She loved our team, and would often follow them around, helping them on the job. She was fiercely protective of Bo, who she rightly sensed wasn’t always as alert and attentive as she was. She had her eccentricities: other than Bo, she preferred people to dogs; she was a loud and sloppy drinker; and despite being a Portuguese Water Dog, she hated getting wet. But as far as our family was concerned, she was pretty much perfect, and for thirteen years, she would be by our side – always loyal, always sweet, always ready for adventure, still fiery and gorgeous till the very end of her days. We will miss her terribly, and imagine she’s with her big brother now, making sure he’s okay.

Today we reflect on loss, courage, and resilience. One way he Obama Presidential Center shares this story is a framed American flag that was carried by SEAL Team Six and Army pilots during Operation Neptune’s Spear, which killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan in 2011.

There’s a whole community buzzing at the Obama Presidential Center. 🐝 In honor of National Honey Bee Day, meet Janelle, program manager for Westside Bee Boyz and one of the resident beekeepers caring for two colonies of Italian honeybees on campus. Inside every colony, everyone has a role — from worker and nursery bees helping care for the hive to the queen, who can lay thousands of eggs each day. And as Janelle reminds us, honey bees are a matriarchal society — something that has taught her firsthand about the value of female-led spaces. The story extends beyond the hive, too. Native bees help pollinate plants behind roughly one in three bites of food we eat, which is one reason the native plants growing across campus matter so much.
