Ocarina of Time came out on my seventh birthday, Nov 21st, 1998.
At the time, my family lived in a drafty, beat-up old farmhouse in upstate New York. My mom was in nursing school and my dad worked for a cable company.
That Christmas was unique. After my sister and I opened our presents, my dad handed us a letter. It had a clue written on it, and each clue led to another until we eventually found a huge box wrapped like a present in our closet.
It was an N64. This was the first "big present" we'd ever received in our little lives.
That winter, each evening after dinner, we'd spend the last hour before bed watching our dad play Zelda like as if it were a movie.
Some nights, he'd even let us stay up past our bedtime, reading the game manual we picked up from Blockbuster, to give him hints whenever he got stuck.
While I don't think this remake will capture the cozy an adventurous wonder of that era of gaming, I still look forward to sharing the experience of this game with my kids.
