Bitcoin's moat is real, and protocol conservatism is what protects it. Nobody should be touching the 21M cap or the validation rules. But "features can be built over time" assumes something ships. Dandelion would have hidden which node first broadcast your transaction. It was closed unmerged. Erlay would have cut the bandwidth a node spends relaying transactions, which matters most on metered connections in poor countries. After years of review it still hasn't shipped. Neither one touches consensus or the monetary policy. And when features do ship, they break where it counts. Core 30 shipped a wallet migration bug that could delete every wallet file in your directory. Core 31 shipped private broadcast, the feature meant to hide where your transaction came from, and a hostile node could force it to fall back and reveal your IP. Conservatism is supposed to mean changes come slowly because they're done carefully. Here the safe improvements never ship, and the ones that do still break. Meanwhile the people Bitcoin was built for picked something else. Between mid-2023 and mid-2024, stablecoins were 61.8% of all crypto transaction volume in Argentina and 59.8% in Brazil. Those are the inflation hedgers, remittance senders, and unbanked savers the Bitcoin pitch is about. They're holding Tether, a dollar an issuer can freeze. A moat keeps competitors out. When nothing works, it keeps these people out too.

Shielded Bitcoin just dropped. Zcash-style privacy on L1, no soft fork. Clever cryptography. A couple of things they'd rather you didn't ask about. Want the full breakdown? I'm hosting BitDevs @PubKey DC next Wednesday at 6pm.
