On August 1, 1906, an undersea telegraph cable connecting the United States and Japan officially went into service. This vital link in the trans-Pacific communications network ran from the Japanese mainland through Chichijima in the Ogasawara Islands to Guam, extending to Honolulu and finally San Francisco. It enabled direct telegraphic communication between the two nations for the first time. This new infrastructure completely transformed diplomacy, commerce, and journalism, marking a historic turning point that dramatically shrank the distance between the U.S. and Japan.
