Newly revealed court documents show that an Afghan migrant brought 22 family members to the UK under the secret Afghanistan Response Route, created after a 2022 Ministry of Defense data breach exposed the personal details of nearly 19,000 Afghans who had applied for UK resettlement. Officials said arrivals brought an average of eight relatives each, with some families in the high teens, forcing the government to scramble for accommodation. UK courts expanded the definition of "family member," with a High Court ruling stating there was no requirement for a blood or legal relationship, allowing wider groups to qualify under human rights grounds. Internal documents reportedly show that only about 10% of these additional relatives would previously have been eligible, but following the data breach, officials expected eligibility to rise to around 55%, potentially allowing 12,500 additional family members to enter the UK instead of roughly 2,200 under earlier rules. Sources in Afghanistan revealed that, amid the chaos following the breach, some individuals with criminal backgrounds entered the UK while some Afghans who had worked closely with British forces were left behind.
