BIG | 🇱🇹☢️‼️ Lithuania’s parliament has backed a legal amendment that would open the door to nuclear weapons being stationed on Lithuanian territory, marking a potentially significant shift in the country’s defense posture. ▪️ The amendment received 99 votes in favor, 13 against and five abstentions. It will now move to parliamentary committees, with two further votes required before final adoption. The first is scheduled for October 6, followed by a final vote on January 12, 2027. ▪️ In June, the Financial Times reported that Washington was considering the possibility of deploying U.S. nuclear weapons in Poland and the Baltic states. Lithuania subsequently confirmed discussions and raised the possibility of changing its constitutional restrictions. The Kremlin has warned that Lithuania would become a target for Russian nuclear forces if such weapons were stationed there. Russia’s deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus after the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine has already altered the nuclear balance on NATO’s eastern flank. Lithuania’s move does not mean nuclear weapons will automatically be deployed, but it would remove a domestic legal obstacle should NATO and the United States pursue such an option in the future.
