4/4のスローな曲（例えば “Georgia on My Mind” やスロー・ブルース）で、各拍が3つに分かれるフィールを、日本では「3連」とか「6/8」と呼ぶ人が結構多い気がします。 でも、私がアメリカで演奏していた頃は、こういうフィールは普通に “12/8”（トゥウェルヴ・エイト）と言っていました。 考えてみれば、3＋3＋3＋3＝12/8で、大きな拍は4つ。 一方、6/8は3＋3＝6/8で、大きな拍は2つです。 なので、4拍で進むスロー・ブルースなどのフィールを「6/8」と言われると、今でも少し違和感があります。 もう一つ理由があって、アメリカで「6/8」という言葉をフィールとして使うときは、私の場合は Afro-Cuban 6/8 のようなフィールを演奏することが多く、12/8のスロー・ブルースとはかなり違うものとして捉えていました。 もちろん6/8＝必ずAfro-Cubanという意味ではありませんが、フィールを伝える言葉として考えると、6/8と12/8は分けて使った方が演奏者同士のイメージも共有しやすいと思っています。 特に、もともと4/4として捉えている曲について「6/8フィールで」と言われると、「それは12/8では？」と頭の中で思ったりします。 もちろん、最終的には現場で通じればそれでいい話ではあるんですけどね。
