When he converted the estate into a private club in 1995, Trump welcomed Black and Jewish members at a time when most elite Palm Beach clubs still excluded them. This broke with the town’s long-standing discriminatory culture. Later, when the town hit Mar-a-Lago with heavy zoning restrictions, traffic limits, noise rules, and membership caps, Trump sued for $100 million. He argued in part that officials were retaliating against him because his club was open to everyone while council members had ties to more restrictive clubs. The lawsuit was eventually settled out of court. Trump won relief on many of the restrictions, and Mar-a-Lago continued operating as one of the few truly inclusive clubs in Palm Beach.
