Pakistan has told the United Kingdom that Shabir Ahmed, the ringleader of the Rochdale grooming gang, was "raised, groomed and spoilt in Britain."
The outraged response has been almost universal. Here is the problem. It is true, and I can prove it.

She was born in Paris on August 15, 1910, into a wealthy assimilated French-Jewish family that had been in France for generations. Her father Robert Schmidt was a respected lawyer. Her mother came from a prominent commercial dynasty. She grew up in comfortable Parisian bourgeois circles — good schools, cultured summers, the specific social world of the French Jewish upper class of the 1920s.
She married a French banker named Roger Fabius in 1928, when she was eighteen. Their only child Marie-Claude was born in 1930.
By 1940, when the Wehrmacht occupied France, she was thirty years old.
The Fabius family had every reason to keep their heads down. Assimilated Jewish families in occupied France in 1940 faced an escalating series of decisions, each one worse than the last. Register with the authorities. Wear the yellow star. Comply with the specific institutional apparatus that the Vichy government and the German occupation were building against them.

She walked out of the cinema, into the streets of occupied Marseille, and toward the safe house where members of her Alliance cell were meeting. She had received urgent intelligence that the Gestapo was closing in on the meeting. She was going to warn them.
She did not get there in time.
She was arrested on the street by German security agents before she reached the safe house. She was interrogated for weeks in a Marseille prison. She was labeled — in her own subsequent trial file — a dangerous terrorist. She was held in total isolation.
She gave the Gestapo nothing.
Marie-Claude waited in the darkened cinema until the film ended and the lights came up. Her mother did not appear. She eventually made her own way home. Her father Roger, warned by the network of what had happened, took her into hiding immediately. Marie-Claude spent the remainder of the war under a false identity in the French countryside. She would not see her mother again for over two years.
In April 1943, after two months in Marseille, Odette was transferred to Fresnes prison outside Paris — the main German security prison for political detainees in the occupied zone. She spent another eight months there, still refusing to name a single member of the Alliance network.
On January 31, 1944, she was loaded onto a deportation train.
The convoy she was on carried approximately one thousand women. Every prisoner number began with the digits 27. Hers was 27393.
The train arrived at Ravensbrück concentration camp in northern Germany before dawn on February 3, 1944.
Ravensbrück was the specific Nazi camp system's principal concentration camp for women. Over the course of the war, approximately one hundred and thirty thousand women passed through it. Approximately forty thousand of them died there. The remainder were selected for forced labor in the camp's associated munitions plants, medical experimentation subunits, or transferred onward to Auschwitz.
Odette did not intend to disappear into it quietly.
Within her first days at the camp she attempted to escape.
Three days later she was recaptured.
The punishment was fifty lashes with a leather whip in the camp courtyard while other prisoners were forced to watch. The SS officer administering the beating counted the strokes out loud. He was, on the recorded testimony of several fellow prisoners who witnessed it and survived, expecting Odette to scream, to beg, to give some sign of breaking.
She made no sound.
Not one, across all fifty strokes.
When it ended, the officer reportedly demanded to know how she had stayed silent.
Her answer, on the recorded testimony passed down by the survivors of her block, was five words.
Je suis française. C'est tout.
I am French. That is all.
Eight days in an isolation cell followed. Then transfer to the Strafblock — the punishment barracks — where the specific mortality rate exceeded that of the rest of the camp.
A fellow prisoner named Dorothea Binz-Schneidenbach, a Belgian artist, sketched her by candlelight in the days after the beating — thin, shaved, wounded, upright. That drawing survived the war. It now hangs in the Museum of Jewish Art and History in Paris.
By the winter of 1944-45 Odette was failing.
A French physician imprisoned at the camp — Dr. Anne Spoerry, who would after the war become one of the most famous flying doctors in East Africa — quietly took her into the camp infirmary and hid her there from January through April 1945. Spoerry protected Odette from the daily selections that were sending failing prisoners to the gas chambers at the neighboring Uckermark subcamp.
That single specific decision by Spoerry is why Odette lived.
On April 23, 1945 — days before the German surrender — the Swedish Red Cross negotiated the White Buses evacuation that carried surviving female prisoners of Ravensbrück out of the camp system and into neutral Sweden. Odette was in one of the buses.
She spent the following month unconscious in a school in a small Swedish town that had been converted into a hospital.
She lived another forty-five years.
She was reunited with Marie-Claude and Roger in Paris in the autumn of 1945. She wrote a memoir titled Un lever de soleil sur le Mecklenburg — A Sunrise over Mecklenburg — published in 1986. She was made a Commander of the Legion of Honour. She held five separate French wartime decorations, including the Medal of the Escaped — awarded, fittingly, to those who had attempted to escape from a concentration camp.
She died in Paris on August 19, 1990, at eighty years old.
Marie-Claude, the little girl from the Marseille cinema, lived into her nineties. When she was asked, decades later, whether her mother should have taken the specific risks she took, whether the specific afternoon in the cinema was a mistake, whether a mother should have chosen the Resistance over her own child, she never hesitated.
She said her mother could not have been any other way.
She said that was simply who her mother was.
Some people are taken from this world.

Three separate selling machines just lined up behind Bitcoin at the same price, and almost no trader watching the chart can see two of them. Everyone sees the first! That Bitcoin at 58,653 dollars, below every major moving average, with about 3.3 billion dollars pulled from ETFs this year.
That is the visible story. The two hidden ones are why $60k is not just a number. It is a trapdoor. Check closely!
The surface alone is bad enough. Bitcoin trades below all twelve of its major moving averages (MAs), every one flashing SELL, and the most important, the 200-day near 60,700 dollars, now sits above the price instead of below it.
For eighteen months that average was the floor buyers defended. It became the ceiling sellers lean on. Price under the 200-day with every shorter average stacked above it is what a downtrend looks like, and Bitcoin has been in one since the 126,000 dollar peak on 6th October 2025.
Now the first machine most folks usually miss. On Deribit, where the real Bitcoin options market lives, dealer gamma is negative around the $60k strike.
Strip the jargon and it means one brutal thing. The market makers who sold all those puts are forced to hedge in the same direction the price is already moving.
When Bitcoin falls, they sell more to stay balanced. When it rises, they buy. The options market is not cushioning the move, it is amplifying it. Below roughly $60k, every dealer becomes a seller into weakness, adding force to the same direction the ETF outflows are already pushing.
Then the second hidden machine, the one Citi just named. Treasury companies that loaded $BTC onto their balance sheets now sit on positions bought at higher prices, and if the drop deepens some may be forced to sell. A third stream of supply in the same spot. ETF redemptions, negative-gamma dealer hedging, and potential treasury selling all aim at the same thin band around $58-$60k, and each one triggers the next.
Outflows push price down, the lower price forces dealer selling, dealer selling pressures the treasuries, and the loop tightens.
That is why one number carries the whole market. 60,000 dollars is not a random line.
I think it is at once the 200-day moving average, the options level where dealer hedging flips from stabilizing to amplifying, and the shelf every chartist watches. Three systems, technical, derivative, and behavioral, converge on one price.
Lose it with conviction and the machinery below is built to accelerate, not absorb. That is the honest bear case, mechanical, not emotional. Yup!
The other half almost no BTC Bear will tell you is that the same structure that makes the downside violent is building the floor.
On-chain, the average holder is now close to break-even, the zone where past selloffs have exhausted themselves rather than deepened.
Network security sits near record highs even with price cut in half. And negative gamma cuts both ways: the identical hedging that accelerates a breakdown becomes fuel on the way up, because once price reclaims the level, those same dealers are forced to buy into strength.

He walked into Mecca disguised as an Afghan doctor, took a spear through the face in Somalia, and translated the Kama Sutra into English before dinner.
Sir Richard Francis Burton was the closest thing Victorian England ever produced to a comic-book character.
He spoke twenty-nine languages fluently. He could break the back of a new one, he claimed, in six weeks. He was a master swordsman. He was reputed to have fought more men in single combat than any other British officer of his generation. He had "panther eyes" and a moustache that terrified junior lieutenants. His fellow Bombay Army officers gave him the nickname Ruffian Dick — not affectionately.
He was born in Torquay, England, on March 19, 1821, to an Anglo-Irish army officer and an English mother. He spent his childhood on the continental European boarding-school circuit — France, Italy, back to France. By the time he was fifteen he was fluent in five languages and had been in fistfights on three countries' worth of playgrounds.
At Oxford he lasted less than two years.
On his first morning at Trinity College, another undergraduate walked past him in the courtyard and made a comment about his moustache. Burton challenged him to a duel on the spot. The other student wisely declined. Burton spent the next eighteen months treating the entire Oxford establishment with open contempt. When the dons caught him attending a horse race in defiance of a specific college rule, they expelled him for good.
He drove out of Oxford in a horse-drawn carriage, blowing a bugle at the professors as he left.
He joined the East India Company's Bombay Army the same summer.
They sent him to India. He spent the next seven years posted to the 18th Regiment of Bombay Native Infantry in Gujarat and Sindh. His fellow officers hated him. He preferred the company of the locals. He learned Hindustani, Gujarati, Marathi, Punjabi, Sindhi, Saraiki, Persian, and Arabic, and passed six formal army language examinations.
He kept forty tame monkeys in his officer's quarters, trying to reconstruct their vocabulary. He claimed to have identified sixty distinct "words" before his commanding officer forced him to release them.
He worked undercover for the army in the brothels of Karachi.
In 1853, he disappeared.
The Bombay Army knew he had taken leave. They did not know that Burton had grown a full beard, memorized the Quran in Arabic, adopted the identity of an Afghan doctor named Hajji Mirza Abdullah, and joined a caravan of Muslim pilgrims heading east.
Non-Muslims caught inside Mecca were executed on sight.
Burton walked the entire Hajj pilgrimage circuit. He drank from the Zamzam well. He touched the Kaaba. He returned to his tent each night and mapped the interior of the Great Mosque from memory, drawing floor plans the British military had wanted for a century.
He came home alive, a Hajji.
Two years later he was back on the Horn of Africa, leading a Royal Geographical Society expedition to find the source of the Nile. On the morning of April 19, 1855, at approximately 2:30 AM, two hundred Somali warriors of the Isaaq clan attacked his camp on the Berbera coastal plain in what is now northern Somalia.
Burton grabbed his sabre and fought back in the dark.
In the chaos, a Somali warrior drove a javelin through the left side of his jaw. The metal shaft entered his left cheek and came out the right side. His mouth was pinned shut by an iron spear the length of his forearm.
He fought his way out of the camp anyway.
Lieutenant William Stroyan, one of his fellow officers, was killed in the same attack. John Hanning Speke, Burton's second-in-command, was wounded eleven times. Burton escaped on foot with the javelin still lodged through his face. He carried the visible scar on his left cheek for the next thirty-five years.
He was back in the field within a year.
In 1858, still healing, he trekked with Speke deep into the interior of East Africa. They became the first Europeans to see Lake Tanganyika. Speke pressed on alone and discovered Lake Victoria, which he believed was the true source of the Nile. The two men returned to England as bitter enemies. Speke died of a gunshot wound the afternoon before their public debate at the Royal Geographical Society was to be held. It was officially ruled an accident. Burton always believed Speke had killed himself rather than face him.
Burton took a diplomatic posting instead.
He spent the next thirty years as a British consul — in Fernando Pó off West Africa, then Santos in Brazil, then Damascus, and finally Trieste on the Adriatic coast.
He wrote.
Across those thirty years he authored forty-three books and translated thirty more. He gave English readers the first unabridged translation of One Thousand and One Nights — the Arabian Nights — in sixteen volumes between 1885 and 1888. He translated the Kama Sutra from Sanskrit in 1883. He translated The Perfumed Garden from Arabic in 1886. He translated Camões' Lusiads, the Portuguese national epic, in 1880.
He wrote three books on swordsmanship: A New System of Sword Exercise for Infantry in 1876, The Book of the Sword in 1884, and The Sentiment of the Sword, published after his death.
He wrote poetry. Geography. Anthropology. A whole book on falconry.
He died at his consular residence in Trieste on the morning of October 20, 1890, of a massive heart attack. He was sixty-nine.
His widow Isabel Arundell Burton — a devout Catholic who had spent thirty years married to the least Catholic man in the British Empire — arranged last rites over his still-warm body. Then she took his forty years of private journals, his unpublished translations, and the entire supplementary appendix to The Perfumed Garden, and burned them all in the garden behind the consulate.
She said she was protecting his soul.
Historians have been trying to reconstruct what was in those journals for a hundred and thirty-five years.

Her name was Mary Engle Pennington. She was thirty-two years old. She was a Quaker-raised bacteriological chemist from Philadelphia with a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. She was the first woman ever hired as a scientist by the Bureau of Chemistry — the federal agency that would eventually become the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The WARN Act. The Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act requires sixty days' advance notice for mass layoffs affecting a hundred or more employees at a single site. Sixty days. That is the law. The law has an exemption for employees classified as remote workers. Remote workers do not have a "site." Therefore they cannot be laid off from a site. Therefore they do not require sixty days' notice. Therefore, if you classify everyone as remote, the WARN Act does not apply.
We classified them as remote.
Some of them did not know. They worked hybrid schedules. They came to the office three days a week. They badged in at the lobby. They sat at assigned desks. They attended all-hands meetings in the cafeteria. They had a coffee mug in the kitchen with their name on it. But the database said remote. And the database was not describing where they worked. The database was describing how we planned to remove them. The classification was the first step of the termination. They just didn't know it yet.
I want to be precise about this. A loophole is an accident in the law that someone discovers. This was a design decision in the database that someone engineered. I engineered it. I looked at the WARN Act. I looked at our classification system. I made them compatible. That is not exploitation. That is architecture.
