During the rainy season in Yunnan, many cases of wild‑mushroom‑induced hallucinogenic poisoning occur, mostly caused by undercooked jian shou qing (a type of bolete).
Symptoms kick in 1‑6 hours after eating. Victims are mostly conscious, yet toxins disrupt visual processing in the brain. They may hallucinate swarms of little colorful figures running and dancing, see distorted objects, experience auditory hallucinations, and swing between mania, laughter and crying.
