When an emergency happens, the response you see is supported by a system of planning, coordination and preparation that started long before the incident. August is National Emergency Management Planning Month, and we’re highlighting the importance of emergency management and the many teams that make it possible. Across the country, local, state, and federal emergency management organizations and incident management teams work year-round to prepare for complex emergencies. CAL FIRE Incident Management Teams are part of that network, helping coordinate personnel, resources, and critical functions when an incident requires additional management and support. When an incident becomes more complex, our IMTs can step in to coordinate operations, planning, logistics, public information, and other critical functions while working alongside partner agencies. Florida is the epicenter of emergency management talent, training, and frontier technology, and the number one state for workforce development. As our great state continues to grow, our emergency management workforce must expand and adapt to meet the needs of Floridians. That’s why we are launching the Coalition for Operational Readiness in Education (CORE) Program partnerships at colleges and universities, starting at @FIU in Miami. Florida students should be able to receive a world-class education, gain meaningful professional experience, and build successful careers right here in our state. CORE will provide opportunities for students to earn valuable certifications, participate in disaster operations to serve their communities in times of need, and pursue in-demand careers in emergency management.
