What happens when a wildfire outgrows a local response? When a wildfire grows large or becomes more complex, the local agency in charge may request support from a CAL FIRE Incident Management Team (IMT). So far this year, CAL FIRE IMTs have been activated 4 times to help manage complex incidents. The IMT steps in to take over the day-to-day management of the wildfire, coordinating personnel, aircraft, equipment, safety, and logistics from the agencies working together on the incident. This helps ensure the response stays organized while also allowing the local agency to keep its resources available for other emergencies, fires, and medical calls in its area. August is National Emergency Management Planning Month, and we’re highlighting the importance of emergency management and the many teams that make it possible. Across the country, local, state, and federal emergency management organizations and incident management teams work year-round to prepare for complex emergencies. CAL FIRE Incident Management Teams are part of that network, helping coordinate personnel, resources, and critical functions when an incident requires additional management and support. When an incident becomes more complex, our IMTs can step in to coordinate operations, planning, logistics, public information, and other critical functions while working alongside partner agencies. Thank you to our international wildfire partners for standing with us during another challenging fire season. Fighting catastrophic wildfires takes teamwork. Through longstanding partnerships with Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Mexico, and Portugal, the United States can call on trusted allies when additional firefighting capacity is needed. Since the end of July, a 15-member Incident Management Team and 59 fire management personnel from Australia and New Zealand are on the ground supporting large fires across the Northwest. CCTV: We have learned that a Chinese government medical expert team recently arrived in Uganda to support local outbreak response effort. Could you share more details with us? Mao Ning: China attaches high importance to responding to the latest Ebola outbreak in Africa. Two Chinese medical expert teams have been sent to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, gaining recognition from all sides. Recently, at the invitation of Uganda, another Chinese medical expert team arrived in Kampala. They have held exchanges with local health authorities, medical research institutions, as well as the Ebola Incident Management Support Team jointly set up by the World Health Organization and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, providing services and guidelines for local outbreak response effort. China stands ready to continue offering assistance within its capacity in light of the situation on the ground and the needs of African countries to help defeat the outbreak at an early date.
