The Helium team filed formal comments with the @FCC on the future of 911. Emergency interoperability should be built on open standards, not proprietary interfaces. The best available network that can carry emergency traffic should be able to help. Helium has already shown this in action. During Hurricane Helene, over 80% of cell sites in the hardest-hit parts of western North Carolina went offline and Team Rubicon built Helium beacons into its mobile recovery units. In Redondo Beach, carrier offload on the city's existing Wi-Fi reconnected a district that high-rise buildings had cut off for years. Helium delivered robust and reliable connectivity to that community, down to the police department basement with no new hardware or capital expenditure necessary. While not an emergency, Mardi Gras showed Helium’s capacity as the Network absorbed a 550% traffic surge and served over 100,000 additional users through standards-based handoff, with no carrier intervention required. That's what open interoperability looks like in the field. Major carriers route subscriber traffic through Helium infrastructure every day, and first responders can confidently rely on it when the tower network fails. Full filing:

The global helium supply chain is tightening: China's helium imports from Qatar have collapsed to near zero, from a peak of ~65 million cubic feet in late-2025, the lowest on record. Imports from Russia have declined -50 million cubic feet over the last 2 quarters, to ~38.5 million cubic feet, the lowest since Q3 2025. The drop comes as the Iran War disrupts exports from Qatar, which supplied ~33% of global helium before the conflict, As a result, spot helium prices for immediate delivery have roughly DOUBLED over the last 4 months. Meanwhile, China has introduced new export controls on helium, despite not being a major producer itself, as the country relies heavily on imports to supply critical industries, including semiconductor manufacturing and medical equipment. China has also been an important transit route for Russian helium into Europe since direct EU imports from Russia were restricted. Helium supply is being squeezed from multiple directions.

An MSP in Northern California added Helium to infrastructure they already owned. “Helium opens up possibilities we couldn’t touch before, whether that’s tracking assets across farmland or solving connectivity problems for a city block.”

Reminder before the weekend: The Helium Network now pays deployers more for data. HIP-150 passed ✅ Per-site reward multipliers up to 5x at high-demand venues, and a target minimum raised from 50% to 80% of what carriers pay for rewardable data, at every site. How it works:
