The Clarity Act. Bitcoin After the Libertarians and Cyberpunks Followed Elvis Out. Bitcoin is hated. It has fallen more than 50% even as the dollar has debased aggressively. What happened? A digitally scarce asset, arguably the cleanest expression of fixed supply ever created, exists alongside a monetary system expanding at roughly 7% annually, and yet the relationship has broken down. The answer is cultural. Bitcoin did not lose its properties, it lost its sponsors. The voices that built the thesis, maximalists, libertarians, cyberpunks, have rotated out, chasing “memory” names in the AI trade. Conviction followed them. Bitcoin maximalism is no longer unfashionable, it is unfunded. But innovation does not stop because markets latch onto a new shiny trade. The paradox remains. Even as its ideological base erodes, the global financial system is reorganizing around blockchain rails, rails that still point back to Bitcoin. Washington is swerving. If the Clarity Act fails, the United States will not delay policy, it will cede it. Another generational own goal will be recorded. Someone else will write the standards. As Scott Bessent put it, “standards are strategy.” America invented the transistor and led the semiconductor revolution, then handed off manufacturing, supply chains, and strategic leverage to East Asia. That was a policy failure. This risks becoming its sequel. By refusing to set clear digital asset rules, Washington is exporting the future, innovation, capital, and talent will move offshore, and the United States will import the system it declined to build. That is not drift. It is abdication. None of this should surprise. Washington cannot pass basic, consensus measures, the failure to advance something as straightforward as the SAVE Act underscores how even simple governance stalls. Expecting strategic clarity in digital assets may be asking too much. Competition will not wait. Digital money and artificial intelligence are converging, and leadership will go to those who set standards early. Bitcoin, for all the hostility, remains intact, technically and conceptually. Remember the contempt. Remember the amnesia. Remember what today’s cyberpunks and libertarian day traders are saying, that it no longer matters. They are wrong. Perfect scarcity matters. It will. In a world with extreme levels of debt and money supply increasing at 7% a year, perfect scarcity matters. The true believers have left the building with Elvis.
