I visited Seattle’s $165 million dollar downtown library and it was OVERRUN with drug addicts. Not only is this library filled with adults who are high on drugs, but they also offer FREE fentanyl test strips, syringes and injectable narcan that anyone, including children, can access. Visitors have complained of “foul odors”, unusable restrooms and harassment by the homeless and I experienced all of this while at this location. Seattle residents just passed a tax increase to raise $480 million dollars for libraries just like this one and this is unfortunately the state that they’re in:

What's the best way to teach math: explicit instruction or less guided learning? This might seem like an opinion-based question where the proper answer is "to each their own." ... except, it's not. One of these options is supported by decades of research into the science of learning. The other is not. Assuming that we define "best" as "produces measurably superior learning outcomes," then the best way to teach math, hands-down, is explicit instruction. Nobody who knows the science of learning is actually debating this (though unfortunately much of the education world does not know the science of learning, hence the debate). A quote from Clark, Kirschner, & Sweller (2012, "Decades of research clearly demonstrate that for novices (comprising virtually all students), direct, explicit instruction is more effective and more efficient than partial guidance. So, when teaching new content and skills to novices, teachers are more effective when they provide explicit guidance accompanied by practice and feedback, not when they require students to discover many aspects of what they must learn. ... We also have a good deal more experimental evidence [since the 1960s] as to what constitutes effective instruction: controlled experiments almost uniformly indicate that when dealing with novel information, learners should be explicitly shown all relevant information, including what to do and how to do it. We wonder why many teacher educators who are committed to scholarship and research ignore the evidence and continue to encourage minimal guidance when they train new teachers. After a half century of advocacy associated with instruction using minimal guidance, it appears that there is no body of sound research that supports using the technique with anyone other than the most expert students. Evidence from controlled, experimental (a.k.a. "gold standard") studies almost uniformly supports full and explicit instructional guidance rather than partial or minimal guidance for novice to intermediate learners. It’s always fine to make an accurate reference to a person’s sex. It’s never fine to throw a tantrum in response to a person making an accurate reference to a person’s sex. It’s always wrong for public authority to abridge anyone’s right to free speech.

In 1967, I was one of four women on the university’s table tennis first team. I would sometimes practice with the worst player in the men’s fourth team. He would always beat me as he was larger and more powerful. Nowadays, he could’ve replaced me if he identified as a woman. That’s just not fair. Keep men out of women’s sports.

Let this be a warning to all hospitals and medical providers who are sterilizing children, selling the lie that there is a thing called a gender identity and that efficacious medicine includes wrong sex hormones, arresting natural puberty, removal of body parts and removing bones (looking at you @BriannaWu) that you will be held to account.

This man is part of the crowd who cancelled us. We met him in 2013/14, did some gigs with him and another musician at the time, put them both up in our van for the one night during our tour. But he didn’t look or act like he does today. He more looked like the old photo of him I’ve posted here, and he was a polite and decent young musician. He, and almost everybody else who were part of cancelling us - all now claim to be the opposite sex. They’re all weird and deranged now. There’s a lot to be said about the way porn addiction is a core part of being “trans” and how it literally makes these people sick and perverted. Or perhaps they were always prone to that, and “trans” ideology gives them permission to openly lean into their perversions.

Our claims of “learning is not memorization” may sound poetic in the abstract. But when asked to break them down concretely, we find our explanations start to sound more and more like “Tower-building is not nailing wood, not welding steel, not balancing load, it is none of those mechanical things, it is the emergent grace of brushing the heavens.” Which is completely devoid of instructional value, and entirely unhelpful to any aspiring tower-builder, aside from possibly inspiring a fleeting spark of motivation that spends itself searching for a place to spend itself.
