Add the shirtless action movies and it felt like his entire career had been reduced to one very specific version of Matthew McConaughey. Then after GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST, he basically said enough. McConaughey has talked openly about telling his agent he wasn’t doing rom-coms anymore. He spent roughly two years turning down roles he knew he could easily get, even while the offers kept coming. Eventually there was nothing. He had to sit there and wait for Hollywood to figure out what to do with him. Then he comes back as the lead of Christopher Nolan’s INTERSTELLAR and stars in TRUE DETECTIVE. And the crazy part is that he didn’t just become “the serious Matthew McConaughey.” He completely changed what people thought he could do. DALLAS BUYERS CLUB won him the Oscar. MAGIC MIKE became a huge hit. TRUE DETECTIVE became a phenomenon. INTERSTELLAR proved he could carry a massive studio movie. Even at the time, critics were calling it an astonishing turnaround.
