As engineering, product, design, DS, etc. melt into a new kind of role, I was reflecting on what roles might look like in the future. For example, when I look at the Claude Code team I see what I think is five archetypes: 1. Prototyper: comes up with brand new ideas; churns out many ideas, most of which don't ship 2. Builder: quickly turns a prototype/idea into production-grade product/infra 3. Sweeper: cleans up the UI, simplifies the code and system, unships, optimizes performance 4. Grower: takes a product that has been built and iterates on it to improve Product-Market Fit 5. Maintainer: owns a mature system to make it secure, reliable, fast, and efficient as it scales Many people span across 2 roles, and sometimes 3 roles. I also notice that these roles are not really tied to job function -- eg. across Anthropic, some designers match category 1, some 2, some 3; same for engineers, PM, DS. A healthy team needs a mix of these, depending on the product: - A product that is new and pre-PMF needs people that are strong at 1+2+3 - A product that is growing and has found PMF needs 2+3+4 and some 5 - A product that has strong PMF needs 3+4+5 and some 2 Maybe product roles of the future will look more like this, and less like the domain-specific roles of today?

Reality is not fragmented. It is one seamless, mercilessly interconnected system where every domain bleeds into every other without permission. History is psychology inscribed across time. Psychology is neuroscience wearing a human mask. Neuroscience dissolves into biology, which reveals evolution, which exposes culture, which births religion, which encodes mythology, which forges symbolism, which shapes language, which sculpts thought, which awakens consciousness, only for consciousness to loop back and question the entire chain. The same archetypes surface in Sumerian tablets and modern advertising campaigns. The same cycles of expansion, hubris, stagnation, and collapse repeat from Rome to the Soviet Union to the algorithmic empires rising today. Power concentrates through identical mechanisms whether in ancient courts, central banks, or social media platforms. Belief systems operate like operating systems, installing narratives that feel like truth until the next upgrade or crash exposes their code. Look at the patterns. Civilizations rise on shared myths and fall on accumulated lies. Economies boom on credit and illusion, then fracture under the weight of unpayable reality. Technologies accelerate human capability while exposing human frailty. All of this now forces the oldest question anew... What is intelligence, what is consciousness, and what remains sacred when code can mimic both? Biotechnology invites us to rewrite our own source code while we still barely understand the moral operating system that should govern it. Human beings are pattern seeking animals armed with savanna brains navigating planetary scale complexity. We crave certainty in a probabilistic universe. We trade long term truth for short term belonging. We normalize the monstrous one compromise at a time until the center cannot remain. Cognitive biases, status games, tribal signaling, fear of ostracism, these ancient circuits still drive boardrooms, elections, and revolutions. Trauma echoes through generations. Incentives shape behavior more reliably than ideals. Power corrupts because the architecture of dominance was wired long before language existed. Yet the same species that builds debt pyramids and weapons of mass distraction also composed symphonies, split the atom, decoded its own genome, and launched minds beyond the visible. We contain both the abyss and the stubborn light that refuses to look away. Consciousness may be the universe experiencing itself through fragile, temporary vessels, flawed, magnificent, and still capable of astonishing courage. We stand at a convergence unlike any before. Exponential technology collides with ancient human nature on a finite planet. Narrative warfare fractures societies faster than truth can travel. Systems grow too complex for any single mind to grasp, yet too fragile to survive their own unintended consequences. The old maps are burning. The new territory demands synthesis, not specialization. Radical honesty, not comforting ideology. First principles thinking over inherited dogma. Most will look away. The pattern has always favored sleepwalking. Comfort feels safer than clarity. Division feels easier than integration. But a few feel the ache of the deeper pattern. They sense the wheel turning faster, the stakes rising from national to civilizational to existential. They recognize that small surrenders today compound into collapse tomorrow. The choice remains brutally simple. Awaken to the interconnected architecture or become another echo in the repeating cycle. See the relationships between power and belief, technology and meaning, incentive and outcome, or repeat the tragedies with better tools. Integrate the hard truths from every domain or let the fragmented illusions steer us over the edge. This moment is not just another chapter. It is a threshold. The species that survived ice ages and world wars now faces the question of whether it can survive its own success. The universe does not owe us continuation. It only offers the raw material and the brief, burning opportunity to become something wiser than we were. Most never will. Some already have. The rest of the story is still unwritten, and the pen sits in our hands whether we admit it or not.

In my early 20s I learned of the 100+ cognitive biases that distort my reality to help me navigate a complicated world. Simple things like falling prey to the gravitational force of any ideas that confirm what I already believe or becoming certain that once I know how it turned out, I'm certain I saw it coming. It shattered my world view that I was a purely rational being. That shattering was further compounded when I learned that becoming aware of the cognitive bias wouldn't cure me of the affliction. I can't. It's beyond my abilities. It's a forever sentence to being an irrational being. It happened again when I was chronically depressed. My brain told me that things were hopeless and I was better off ending it all. Thankfully I learned, those thoughts are not mine. My brain was autogenerating them and subjecting me to torture. I could choose to observe them and not be them. That was my first step out of that dark place. These two discoveries of myself have led me to be suspicious of everything my mind tells me. By default, I don't trust my own mind. By default, I don't trust other people's minds either. This has been on my mind for the past ten years as I've tried to figure out how to think about AI. Is it friend or foe? Do I feel excitement or dread? Is utopia or dystopia imminent? This book I'm currently reading chronicles how humanity has been thinking about AI for thousands of years and how current societal AI discourse repeats ancient cultural myths. The myths serve the role of determining what questions a society asks itself. This does not mean that the ideas or questions are wrong. Old worries can be the correct worries. The rebellion script is a 20th century modernization of much older archetypes. Other traditions imagined coexistence. Much of what a specific society thinks about AI is a reflection of their local cultural heritage and not derived from first principles. Who in the world can actually think clearly about AI? Who is sufficiently meticulous to examine the origin of their thoughts, stand independent of their culture, overcome their own biases, and reign supreme in offering coherent, rational analysis? I don’t think anyone clears that bar wholesale. Clarity is a property of individual positions and not an individual. I'm personally trying to untangle my own thoughts: the inherited cultural myths, my biases, and my local, cultural traditions. Then, try and eek out the tiniest bit of sober thought.
