In October 1967, during the Vietnam War, John McCain was shot down over Hanoi while flying a bombing mission launched from the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany (CV-34). After ejecting from his aircraft, he sustained serious injuries, including broken arms and a severely damaged knee. He was captured by North Vietnamese forces and later offered early release due to his father’s position as a senior U.S. Navy admiral. McCain refused the offer in accordance with the U.S. military’s Code of Conduct, which discouraged accepting preferential treatment while other prisoners remained in captivity. McCain ultimately spent more than five years as a prisoner of war, enduring harsh conditions and torture before being released in 1973 following the Paris Peace Accords. His experience became a defining part of his life and was widely cited as an example of resilience and dedication to military service. His story remains one of the most widely known accounts of American POWs during the Vietnam War.

In April 2015 a Cairo court sentenced him to life with dozens of co-defendants after the 2013 crackdown on Mohamed Morsi’s camp. Egypt listed the charges as funding and membership in the Muslim Brotherhood, plus other protest-related counts. Rights groups called the mass trial political. Soltan has said he is not a Brotherhood member. His father, Salah Soltan, was a Brotherhood figure and served as deputy minister of endowments under Morsi. The Obama administration pressed Egypt after Soltan’s hunger strike. He gave up his Egyptian passport and flew home in May 2015. A State Department statement welcomed the release. He has lived and donated in U.S. politics since. FEC filings reported by The Midwesterner show Soltan of Fairfax, Virginia, made two gifts to Abdul for U.S. Senate on April 15 that hit the $7,000 individual cap. ACMER then sent $25,000 on June 12 to Fighting for Michigan PAC, the super PAC built to elect El-Sayed. Treasurer Muna Jondy put $15,000 into that same PAC and $7,000 straight into the campaign. Executive Director Kristina Blyad gave $1,000. MERIT PAC, which she also treasurers, added $1,500. El-Sayed is the Democratic nominee in Michigan against former GOP Rep. Mike Rogers. He is running to be the first Muslim in the U.S. Senate. The Brotherhood is banned as a terr*orist group in Egypt, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan.
